Projects—Recreational

Neighborhood Water Park and Pool, Fargo, ND- In 1989 LJA completed a study of the aging Harry Howland Outdoor Swimming Pool Complex.  The study determined that it would probably not be feasible to renovate the existing facility since the structure leaked and was not in compliance with current codes for diving.  Also ADA revisions required in the bath house would have been significant.

In 1996, the Fargo Park District and the Fargo School District combined resources to design and build a new complex as part of the Fargo North High School expansion.  The new facility is a combined wading and recreational pool with a zero depth entry.  It has a stainless steel gutter recirculation system and utilizes high rate sand filters and an erosion type chlorine disinfection system.  The bather load is 682 for the complex.  It has a 109 foot water slide and an interactive SCS-110 slide/fountain feature in the wading area.  Separate floor foundations were incorporated into the floor at the zero depth entry. An on-deck lounge area for non-swimmers was also incorporated for spectators and to serve the concession for food consumption. The bath house was planned and programmed by LJA and was designed and constructed as part of the school expansion.

Rice Lake Community Center, Rice Lake, MN The White Earth Tribal Council, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Citizens and the White Earth Construction Manager, and LJA helped define a program for a new Community Center.

Two plans, one large and one smaller, were developed for the Owners to select from. Each had met the minimum criteria set for by the Owners, but the larger building would cost more to construct. Although budget was a concern throughout the design process, but Owners elected to construct the larger of the two plans as the larger building allowed Community needs to be met more thoroughly.

The Community Center includes a large Head Start Classroom capable of serving two classes, playground, Elderly Nutrition Center, Community Nursing Offices, Fitness Center, and a large gymnasium with adjacent locker rooms.

Unity Square Community Center, Milbank, SDThe project involved the entire community in the planning process for a new community center.  It houses a large swimming pool, basketball courts, a weight room, exercise areas, and racquetball courts.  Meeting rooms for local groups are included.

The pool area includes a 108' Water slide with dedicated splash down area at shallow end of pool.  The slide is constructed of reinforced fiberglass and has variable flow control to adjust speed of pool entry.

Centennial Soccer/Softball Complex, Moorhead, MN—The project included eight multi-use diamonds for baseball and softball, a full irrigation system, fencing and backstops, agri-lime infields with drain tile, a 42 acre park site with playground and picnic areas, batting cages, warm-up/practice areas and parking for 290 cars.  The handicapped accessible soccer complex included nine soccer fields with multi-use capability, a full irrigation system, and a parking lot on the 56 acre site.  The facility was designed for future expansion.  Both facilities are designed to attract state, regional and national tournaments.  Complete outdoor sports lighting was also provided.

Hazen Fitness and Recreation Center Planning, Hazen, ND—The city of Hazen was in need of a swimming pool. Acknowledging that an outdoor swimming pool can be used only a few months of the year, the City decided to build swimming pool enclosure. Due to the fact a swimming pool enclosure is quite costly, the swimming pool enclosure grew into the proposed community center.

The building is designed to be constructed in phases as funding becomes available. The building mechanical and electrical systems will be designed to allow for future expansion.

Primary program elements include, a swimming pool with water slide, a community gathering room and gymnasium.
