Student Union Master Plan and Lounge Remodel, NDSU, Fargo, ND—The project involved the remodeling of about 6,000 s.f. of the Memorial Union at North Dakota State University.
The major focus of the project was the “Cul-de-Sac Lounge” on the first floor of the Union. The east entry and attached corridors also received some upgrades.
The “Cul-de-Sac Lounge” had all existing partitions and seating removed, as well as, all ceiling and wall treatments. The updated lounge received new seating, tables, and handicapped accessibility ramp to the main stage. The HVAC systems were modified to accommodate the new design. The lighting was coordinated to allow for maximum flexibility within the space. Internet jacks were roughed in to allow for easy connection in the near future. .
Central Heating Plant, Concordia College, Moorhead, MN— This steam generation plant was built to replace the dated existing facility. Lightowler Johnson worked closely with the Owner to design a facility which not only meets the campus physical plant needs but blends into the campus surroundings. The design received the 1992 Merit Award from the North Dakota Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
The project included two 30,000 pounds per hour steam generators, campus emergency generator relocation, steam distribution, a new 250 ton chiller, chilled water distribution and a 300 hp summer boiler. The building was designed to accept a third 30,000 lb/hr boiler which has since been installed.

Dakota Montessori School Planning and Design, Fargo, ND—Based on the central Montessori philosophy of the Prepared Environment, this project stands apart from the typical school. These elements include residential scale, a strong building core, activity pockets, modified free-space and borrowed landscape.
This 25,000 square foot building within a three-acre site is based on natural materials and colors. Wood floors, quarry tile, brick and large windows stretching to the floor will be found throughout. Infants through third-graders will be taught in the facility utilizing 13 classrooms, a multi-purpose room and secret garden for play times, and nurseries to accommodate infants
After it was determined that funding for a new facility was not a possibility, the Dakota Montessori Board of Directors decided to look for alternate building sites. LJA was hired to helped incorporate the Owners previous program into an existing facility to ensure the quality environment of the facility was met.
The construction schedule and budget were quite tight. Timelines were created to ensure that the School would be open prior to the school year starting. Construction costs were managed to ensure extra or added costs were kept to a minimum. The new floor plans consisted of the same elements that the prior School had tried to create.
Anne Carlsen Center for Children, Jamestown, ND— This project consisted of the remodel of all public areas and classroom areas throughout the center. The entire 45,000 sq. ft. area received new finishes, electrical and mechanical upgrades, and new entry additions. Complete demolition and remodel of administrative areas within the 1948 structure were also included. |
